Letter Ee

Activities   Songs and Poems   Sing Along Song 1 or 2

The letter-sound association we are studying this week is "E e" sounds found in "red and green." Here are some activities your child can do to supplement our school activities.

1. Play a listening game: "Touch your elbow" if the word begins the same as "echo." Your hands should remain in your lap if the word begins with a different sound.

ant, elf, dog, enjoy, enlarge, collar, elk, baby, exit,
lamp, elbow, banana, edge, empty, pencil, edge, elm, envelope

2. Which word begins with the short "E e" sound you hear at the beginning of "echo?" Can you hear the short "E e" sound in the middle of any of the words?

ant, egg, bell       exit, tent, bed
enjoy, neck, dog        coat, cap, elevator
gate, engine, boat      Eskimo, net, pen
elephant, arm, bet      nose, elf, boy

3. Play a Word Guessing game. All of your guesses should begin with the short "E e" sound you hear at the beginning of the word "egg."

a. The part of the train that pulls the cars is called an _______. (engine)
b. You look for this sign when you want to leave a building. _________. (exit)
c. The large, gray animal we see in the zoo with a trunk is called an _________. (elephant)
d. The moving stairs at the mall is called an _______. (escalator)
e. When you finish drinking your juice your glass is ______. (empty)

4. Play a Word Guessing game. All of your guesses should begin with the long "E e" sound you hear at the beginning of the word "Easter."

a. The bird that represents the United States is the bald _____. (eagle)
b. The opposite of hard or difficult is ______. (easy)
c. You use this when you make a mistake with your pencil. _______ (eraser)
d. What word is missing from this problem? Two plus two _______ four. (equals)
e. Which direction is missing? North, South, West and ______ (East)

5. Make "My Egg Book." Point out that many people pronounce the "e" sound in egg like the long a sound. Draw a large egg shape on a piece of white paper and cut it out. Trace that page and cut out more egg-shaped pages for your book. On each page draw an animal that lays an egg to have babies such as, turtles, snakes, frogs, birds, butterflies and dinosaurs. Write a sentence about each page. Read your book to your mom or dad then add the title to our monthly Read-To-Me form. Also, you can find some Animal Life Cycle books to print and make here: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/coloring/lifecycles.shtml or http://search.enchantedlearning.com/cgi-bin/uncgi/search?key=animals+that+lay+eggs.

6. Show your child how to print "E e" this way:

E: Make a straight line from the top line to the bottom line. Make 3 lines from left to right starting at the top, then in the middle and at the bottom.
e: Make a "c" then draw a line from left to right.

7. Make an elephant with your hand.

Songs and Poems

Do Your Ears Hang Low?
Tune: Turkey In The Straw

Do your ears hang low?
Do they wobble to and fro?
Can you tie them in a knot?
Can you tie them in a bow?
Can you throw them
O'er your shoulder
Like a Continental Soldier?
Do your ears hang low?
