Letter Qq Activities

The special letter-sound association we are studying this week is "Q q" as in "quiet queen." Here are some activities you can do with your child at home to reinforce our classroom activities.

1. "Q q" has many different forms. Help your child draw a patchwork quilt on a piece of paper. Then have your child find different forms of "Q q" in newspapers or magazines to glue all over it.

2. In English "Q q" does not have a sound of its own. It is always followed by "u" and has the same sound as the letters "k" and "w" blended together.

Auditory Perception: "Which two words begin like queen?"

catnap, quack, quiet         quarrel, rooster, quiver
question, candle, quiz       quail, quintuplets, pig
quarter, ghost, quick        quilt, kitchen, quaint
quart, quill, pudding         snow, quit, quest

3. Listening-Thinking: "I'm thinking of some words that begin like "quilt." Listen to the clue and tell me what word I am thinking of."

a. This word means fast. What is it? (quick)
b. This word means not noisy. What is it? (quiet)
c. This word means something people ask. What is it? (question)
d. This word means a coin that is more than a dime. What is it? (quarter)
e. This word means a woman who rules a country. What is it? (queen)

4. "Now I am going to tell you about some other words. Each word will begin with the sound of "Q q" in "quarter" and will rhyme with a word I say."

a. I'm thinking of a sound a farm animal makes. It rhymes with back. (quack)
b. I'm thinking of a blanket made out of material pieces.
It rhymes with built. (quilt)
c. I'm thinking of another word for stop. It rhymes with fit. (quit)

5. Show your child how to print "Q q" like this:

Q: Make a big O then place a small straight line in the lower right.
q: Make a small o then make a staright line next to the right side of the o. At the bottom, curve the line to the right.

I Like Qq
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle

Q is for queen with a crown on her head,
Q is for quilt that covers my bed.
Q is for questions that I like asking,
Q is for ducklings' quack-quack-quacking.
Q is for quarter and quick and quill,
I like Q and I always will.

Qq is for Quilt
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star
written by Mrs. Susan Surplus

Soft warm quilt, I love you so.
You warm me from head to toe.
No more shivers q...q...q.
Grandma made you just for me.
Soft warm quilt, I love you so.

Q Followed by U
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star

Q-u, Q-u friends are they; and to-gether they will stay.
U will always follow q; as most good friends often do.
Q-u, as in queen and quit; Like a hand in a glove they fit.

Q will tell the letters, "No!" If his u friend cannot go.
When you see the letter q; next you'll see the letter u.
Q-u, Q-u friends are they; and together they will stay.
