The letter-sound association we are studying this week is "S s" as in "super socks." Here are some activities you can do with your child to reinforce his classroom activities.
1. This week we are making a list of "Ss Things You Can Get in a Restaurant." Your child can make a list of things at home to add to our class list in school.
2. Which two words begin with the "S s" sound in each group?
seed, bean, sunflower mouse, suit, soapy
super, saddle, anchor soldier, pipe, sailor
cowboy, sew, simple safety, salad, moon
3. Which words in these sentences begin with the "S s" sound?
a. Sing a song of sixpence.
b. I like to sing silly songs.
c. In the summer I get sunburned if I stay in the sun too long.
d. Winter is the snowy season.
e. We had soup and salad for supper.
4. Play a Word Guessing game.
All of your guesses should begin with the "S s" sound.
a. When I don't feel well, I am _________. (sick)
b. For lunch I had a peanut butter _________. (sandwich)
c. Before I put on my shoes, I put on my ________. (socks)
d. What number comes after five? After six? After fifteen? After sixteen?
e. What day comes after Friday? After Saturday?
5. Make lists of all the things you can think of that are SOFT, SALTY, taste SOUR; or all the food, animals, names of people that begin with the "S s" sound. Compare the lists you made. Which list is the longest? the shortest? Staple on a cover and make a book called "My Ss Lists."
6. Make a spider. You will need a small paper plate, a scissors, glue, black and white crayons, and black construction paper. Color the top and bottom of the paper plate black. (You can also paint it, use a black marker or trace around the paper plate two times on white paper, color them black, cut them out then glue them to the top and bottom of the plate.) From the black paper, cut 8 strips and glue 4 to each side of the paper plate for legs. (If you don't have black paper you can cut white paper into strips and color them with the black crayon.) Draw white eyes on top. Use invented spelling to write a story about the spider living in your bedroom with you.
7. Show your child how to make "S s" this way:
S: Start at the top and start forming the letter c to the middle line then make a backwards c to the bottom line.
s: Do the same for the lower case s except start at the middle line and end at the bottom line.

Springtime
Tune: Did You Ever See A Lassie
My eyes can see it's springtime, it's springtime, it's springtime
My eyes can see it's springtime, the grass is so green.
The green grass, the flowers, the sunshine, the showers
My eyes can see it's springtime and I am so glad.
My ears can hear it's springtime, it's springtime, it's springtime
My ears can hear its springtime, the birds sweetly sing
The birds sing, the lambs bleat, the frogs croak, the bees buzz
My ears can hear it's springtime and I am so glad.

Here is a poem you can do in a serious way or as a "mad lib."
The morning sun peeked through the trees
To kiss the _____ and the honey bees.
It danced by the _____ and the fields of hay
Until it reached the _____ where it stayed all day.
Sun, sun, don't you run.
Stay with me and have some fun.

We use this song to point out children's names that begin the Ss.
Substitute a different Ss name each time you sing it.
Sally The Camel
Tune: Dem Bones
Sally the Camel has two humps,
Sally the Camel has two humps,
Sally the Camel has two humps, so
Ride Sally, Ride! Boom, Boom, boom.
Sally the Camel has one hump,
Sally the Camel has one hump,
Sally the Camel has one hump, so
Ride Sally, Ride! Boom, Boom, Boom.
Sally the Camel has no humps
Sally the Camel has no humps,
Sally the Camel has no humps, so
Sally is a HORSE!

Find an old large sock and force a small butter tub down to the toe area.
Find as many little items as you can and put them in a can to use for this game. Without beening seen, put one item at a time in the sock. Then we sing the song and let one child reach in and guess what it is. After Ss week I let the children use the can full of items to play the game with their classmates.
There's A Secret In My Sock
Tune: The Farmer In The Dell
There's a secret in my sock,
A secret in my sock,
Can you guess, oh, can you guess

Two little snowflakes caught my eye.
