Raps, Chants and Songs about The Months
To remember which months are the short months, make a fist, say the names of the months of the year starting with January on your first knuckle. February is the space between your first and second knuckles, March is your second knuckle, and so on. August goes back to your first knuckle. The short months are the months that fall on the spaces between your knuckles.
Twelve Months
Tune: Ten Little Indians

November Chant
By Sandy Tuttle
X = clap
No - vem - ber X, No - vem - ber X
No - vem - ber X, No - vem - ber X
Thanksgiving Day will soon be here.
We celebrate it every year.
Family, friends gather near.
To give thanks for what is dear.
Pilgrims, Indians gathered round,
Sitting at tables, not on the ground.
For three whole days they feasted on -
Deer, turkeys, beans, squash, and fish,
Cornbread, berries and corn soup in a dish.
Pilgrims thanked their Indian friends
For their help in this new land.
The year was 1621,
Today we say . . .
The 4th Thursday XX is Thanksgiving XX.
The 4th Thursday XX is Thanksgiving XX.
Let's give thanks!

December Chant
By Sandy Tuttle
X=clap
De-cem-ber X, De-cem-ber X (recite twice)
December is sensational!
Smells of Christmas in the air.
Candles burning by the pair.
Gingerbread, pine, peppermints,
Lots of lovely Christmas scents.
Taste the ginger, sample the mint,
Lick the frosting - colored a Christmas tint.
Touch the needles on the tree,
Hug your friends for you and me.
Bells a-ringing,
People singing,
Listen to the drummer pound,
Aren't these all such joyful sounds?
What a sight on Christmas morn -
Presents that will soon be torn!
Stockings filled with all sorts of things,
That dear old Santa chose to bring.
De-cem-ber X, De-cem-ber X (recite twice)
December is sensational!

J-a-n-u-a-r-y, J-a-n-u-a-r-y
Jan-u-ar-y, Jan-u-ar-y
January's here -- let us give a cheer.
Here's to the first month of the new year.
Thirty-eight years ago in 1963
Martin Luther King dreamed of true equality.
Treat people with compassion is the lesson that he taught
Judge others by their actions and the content of their heart.
In the year 2000, we start a new millennium
Let us live and love each day, and not waste a single one.
A new year has begun, resolutions have been made,
Keep your heart and mind open...never let your vision fade.

Like a Lion
Tune: Mary Had a Little Lamb
March comes in like a lion,
Like a lion, like a lion
March comes in like a lion
And goes our like a lamb.
March comes in with a great big wind
Great big wind, great big wind
March comes in with a great big wind
And goes out with a breeze.

March Lion/Lamb Poem
This poem is appropriate no matter which way the month starts!
When March comes in like a lion
A lamb trots out, we hear.
But when the lamb comes first, my friend,
It's the roar going out that we fear!
So each and every boy and girl
Should watch as March comes in;
We'll know the way the month might end
If we know the way it begins.
*****
March is here.
and lions I fear,
have blown all
the lambs away!
