What is This Shape?
Tune: Frere Jacques
adapted by Mrs. Jones
Heart verse written by Mrs. Jones
Play a game of "Question and Answer"
This is a square. This is a square.
How can you tell? How can you tell?
It has four sides,
All the same size.
It's a square. It's a square.
This is a circle. This is circle.
How can you tell? How can you tell?
It goes round and round,
No end can be found.
It's a circle. It's a circle.
This is a triangle. This is a triangle.
How can you tell? How can you tell?
It only has three sides,
That join to make three points.
It's a triangle. It's a triangle.
This is a rectangle. This is a rectangle.
How can you tell? How can you tell?
It has two short sides,
And it has two long sides.
It's a rectangle. It's a rectangle.
This is a heart. This is a heart.
How can you tell? How can you tell?
It's McDonald's "M,"
With a "V" underneath.
It's a heart. It's a heart.

Teaching suggestions:
Demonstrate "Question and Answer" with the whole class with this song. Make a card for each shape in the song. Have 5 children stand in the front and hold the cards. They each choose an assistant to stand with them or you can choose one assistant for the whole song. Write the questions on the board, "What is this shape?" and "How can you tell?" The child with the shape card points to each word and says, "What is this shape?" then shows the shape to everyone. The class responds singing the correct verse. The assistant points to each word in "How can you tell?" when the class sings them. Continue doing the same thing with the rest of the shapes.
Think about: What other words do questions start with?
Print this song. What does a question mark looks like? Look for patterns of words. Why are some words in a different color? Look for the words that are alike in each verse then, alike in the whole song.
