Guided Reading Posted by Kelly in MD on 1/18/07
I also only see each child for guided reading once a week. I do see them in small groups for other reading skills more than that. I don't introduce a new "skill" each lesson. I pick a strategy that I think that group needs (there are strategy cards on my website if you need some) and I introduce or review it. Sometimes I have more than one focus strategy depending on the group.

Today was our first meeting:

Level A group: Strategy--point with finger while reading...I spent the lesson teaching them to touch each word when reading. Used frogs and lilypads to explain concept. Not my focus but also used picture clues (kind of obvious to them).

Level B group: Strategy--sound out words, use picture clues

Level C group: Strategy--sound out words, use pictures, use punctuation...these kids are READY to read and with expression so that's what we worked on.

All of the kids were so proud of themselves and I really got to see how far they've come this year.
