Here is why the Family Homework of planning
and practicing a Home Fire Escape Plan is so important:

According to a 1997 Allstate fire safety study of 5 to 8 year olds, "most children have never discussed fire safety at home nor practiced a home fire escape plan with their family. Scary but true -- just because your kids have learned about fire safety in school, doesn't mean they know what to do if a fire strikes at home."

Fires are loud, terrifying and confusing, and often cause panic. So, if you haven't planned escape routes from your home, your family might not know how to get out. What's more, getting out is not enough. Unless you have established a "family meeting place" outside the home, your children may run back in the house looking for other family members. It is important to let your whole family help with your escape plan so they will be more likely to remember what to do.

For Family Homework, please make sure your child knows
where to meet your family once you are all outside.

Many local families have visited Linvilla Orchards with their children. On August 16, 2002 the 113 year old octagonal barn burned down. Here are some photos shared with me by John Toal, a firefighter in Middletown Township.

Firefighter Game
Turn the sleeves of 2 jackets inside out. Hang these jackets on the backs of 2 chairs. The chairs are with their backs to each other at a distance of 1 meter. Put a 2m. rope under these 2 chairs. Both of the participants stand at their chairs. On hearing the signal, they take their jackets off the chairs, turn the sleeves out, put them on and do up all the buttons/zipper. Then each "firefighter" runs round the chair of the rival, takes his seat and pulls the rope. The first player to cope with the task is the winner.

Fire Safety Hop
Tune: The Bunny Hop

Fire Safety is important.
It can save my life.
This song will help me remember
What to do! (everyone hop)

If I am sleeping
And the smoke alarm wails
Remember my escape plan
Crawl! Crawl! Crawl! (everyone crawl)

If I see some smoke
Or see a great big fire.
I know what to do.
Call 9-1-1! (hold up pretend phone to ear)

Smoke alarms are needed.
One on every floor.
Make sure they are working
Beep! Beep! Beep! (everyone hop)

I need to tell my parents
The batteries should be new.
So when they change their clocks
Change batteries, too!

Now I know the drill
The things that I must do.
I know fire safety
You can too! (everyone point)

Firefighter
Tune: Eensy Weensy Spider

The firefighter helps us learn our safety rules.
Playing with matches is only for fools.
If you see a fire, "help, you'll scream and shout!"
Dial 911. The firefighter will put it out.

Four Busy Firefighters

Four busy firefighters could not retire
Because they might have to put out a fire.
The first one rang a big brass bell.
The second one said, 'It's the Grand Hotel!'
The third one said, 'Down the pole we'll slide.'
The fourth one said, 'Get ready to ride.'
The siren said, 'Get out of the way!'
'We have to put out a fire today!'
The red fire truck sped on to the fire,
As the big yellow flames grew higher and higher.
Swish went the water from the fire-hose spout
And in no time at all the fire was out.

I Am A Fireman
Tune: I'm A Little Teapot

I am a fireman dressed in red.
With my fire hat on my head.
I can drive the firetruck, fight fire too,
And help make things safe for you.

Firefighter Song
Tune: I'm A Little Teapot

I'm a firefighter; my name is John.
I put my boots and helmet on.
I hurry to the fire and give a shout.
With a burst of water, the fire is out.

Firefighters

Down the street the engine goes
The Firemen fight the fire
Up the ladder with their hose
Out goes the fire.

The Firefighter

This firefighter rings the bell. (thumb)
This firefighter hold the hose so well. (index)
This firefighter slides down the pole. (middle)
This firefighter chops a hole. (ring)
This firefighter climbs higher and higher. (pinky)
And all the firefighters put out the fire!

"I Found Matches!"
Tune: Skip to my Lou

I found matches what do I do?
I found matches what do I do?

Tell me what to do!

Give them to a grown-up that's what I'll do!
Give them to a grown-up that's what I'll do!
Give them to a grown-up that's what I'll do!
Give them to a grown-up!

I found a lighter what do I do?
I found a lighter what do I do?
